Arkhe, a power system unique to Fontaine, is composed of two parts: Ousia and Pneuma. All creatures and mechanical constructs in Fontaine utilize Ark energy to some degree, and most of Fontaine's functions depend on it.
Furthermore, individuals in Fontaine possess Arkhe energy. Fontaine's vision bearers are aligned with either Ousia or Pneuma, and their vision determines their alignment.
Ousia visions have wave-like details spiraling around the vision counterclockwise, devoid of sharp angles. Pneuma visions spiral around the vision clockwise, exhibiting a sharp and angular.
These two energies, polar opposites, react when they come into contact. Ousia is dark blue, while Pneuma is nearly golden. They can be understood as darkness and light, antimatter and matter. Their interaction results in mutual annihilation, generating substantial energy.
Are Ousia and Pneuma New Elements?
No, they are not. Ousia and Pneuma are forms of energy, unrelated to elemental reactions. They are components of a new system, not a replacement for elemental energy nor do they define a character's combat capabilities.
Think of Ousia and Pneuma as additional abilities, akin to summoning Geograna, Electrograna, or Dendrograna through elemental attacks. This won't revolutionize the game but can help clear areas or neutralize mobs faster.
Ousia and Pneuma in Exploration
Since energies form a fundamental part of Fontaine's infrastructure, puzzles and mechanisms throughout the nation utilize this system. Activation requires Ousia Pneuma, depending on the item's alignment, indicated by its glow color.
Keep in mind, you'll need the opposing energy type to mechanisms. So, if you encounter a construct glowing with blue Ousia energy, you'll need Pneuma to activate it, and vice versa.
However, you don't need Fontaine characters to explore the region. While their elemental attacks incorporate this mechanic, you're not confined to them. You can find Ousia and Pneuma energy in the overworld, similar to the Crimson Agate in Dragonspine.
Remember, you'll need the opposite energy type to activate mechanisms. So, if you encounter a construct glowing blue Ousia energy, you'll need Pneuma to activate it, and vice versa.
However, you't necessarily need Font to explore the region. While their elemental attacks have this mechanic embedded, you're restricted to using them. You can find Ousia and Pneuma energy in the overworld, similar to the Crimson Agate in Dragonspine.
Ousia and Pneuma in Battle
These energies also characterize enemies across Fontaine. You can identify an enemy's energy by the color emanating from them. Pneuma can be hard to spot, so look for a yellowish glow.
Similar to exploration, you'll need to attack mobs with the opposing energy. So,neuma mobs react to Ousia energy and versa.
In battle, this energy can serve different purposes. For some mobs, it functions as a shield, which can be instantly shattered when it comes into contact with the opposite energy, effectively neutralizing the enemy for a certain duration. This makesusia and Pneuma valuable in time-based.
Some mobs alter their combat mechanics when attacked with their opposing energy, triggering the Arkhe reaction. In cases, Ousia and Pneuma do not prevent enemies from being affected by elements. The same elemental rules for combat apply, and strengths and vulnerabilities still affect enemies equally. Hence, Ark is optional for most, and your main DPS unit from another nation won't be ineffective in Fontaine.
What Happens When You Use The Same Arkhe Energy Type On A Mob?
If you're concerned about attacking a mob of the same Arkhe as your character, fear not. Attacking a mob with the same Arkhe energy type as your character will not cause any reaction. It won't empower or supercharge mobs. It simply has no effect, even after you've disrupted the mob's Arkhe energy flow.
For, if you're challenging an Ousia Clockwork Meka and have already used Lyney, a Pneuma-aligned unit, to disrupt Ousia state, switching to Lynette and using her elemental skill won't reinstate the enemy's Ousia energy flow. It will remain disabled for the duration of the break.
Are Ousia and Pneuma Necessary For Spiral Abyss?
While Spiral Abyss changes regularly, it's probable that enemies with Ousia and Pneuma alignment will be added to the upper floors to promote Fontaine units.
However, given the long list of characters not modified to fit into the Arkhe system, it's unlikely that the addition of Oia and Pneuma will drastically alter the Spiral Abyss mechanics.
This game mechanic should operate the same way as in Overworld combat. While some enemies will have it, parties will benefit from having units to counter it. However, it shouldn't be necessary to Spiral Abyss with your existing teams.
