The release of Starfield could potentially mark one of the most important milestones in Xbox's history. Microsoft aims to attract gamers with a headliner that rivals the latest Zelda game from Nintendo and the upcoming Spider-Man 2 from PlayStation. Market researcher Mat Piscatella, a game industry analyst, acknowledges the significance of this launch, emphasizing the need for a blockbuster game to drive sales of Xbox consoles and the monthly game subscription service.

Bethesda's Legacy and Starfield's Promise

Much of the excitement surrounding Starfield stems from the past successes of Bethesda Softworks, the renowned studio responsible for iconic series like Doom, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout. Starfield is described as Bethesda's "first new universe in over 25 years." Microsoft's acquisition of Bethesda's parent company, ZeniMax Media, for $7.5 billion in 2021 further amplified the anticipation. The studio had been working on Starfield for years, with initial hints and a trailer released as early as 2018.

However, Starfield finds itself entangled in the midst of another corporate move by Microsoft—the proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the maker of Call of Duty. Sony has raised concerns about potential antitrust issues regarding the $69 billion deal, fearing that Microsoft might make some of Activision's best games exclusive to Xbox. Sony argues that Microsoft's exclusivity strategy with ZeniMax games, including Starfield, offers evidence of its ability and incentive to hinder rivals in the gaming market. Antitrust authorities in Britain and the United States are scrutinizing the acquisition, although other regions,
such as the European Union, have already given their approval.

Navigating a Challenging Gaming Market

Microsoft's pursuit of the Activision deal and efforts to generate excitement for its existing game library comes at a time when the game sales market is experiencing a slowdown. After a surge in interest during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, consumer spending on video games and hardware in the U.S. dropped by 5% in April compared to the previous year, as reported by Circana. However, a 6% decline in-game revenue was partially offset by a 7% growth in hardware sales, particularly for the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch consoles, making it the most successful April for console sales since the pandemic-induced spike in 2020.
