Microsoft's ChatGPT-powered Bing is open for everyone to try starting today.

Microsoft's new ChatGPT-powered Bing experience is now available as a "limited preview" on the desktop for everyone. You'll be limited to a certain number of queries, but you'll be able to sign up for full access soon.

If you visit Bing.com, you may see some sample searches that you can try out if the new interface is displayed. Clicking on them will take you to a Bing search page with traditional results on the left and an AI-generated answer in a chat window on the right. You won't be able to ask follow-up questions or clarify the results until you have full access. Despite the new chat-style UI on the homepage, searching for your own query will return traditional Bing search results.

You can join the waitlist, and Microsoft claims that if you sign in with your Microsoft account, set Microsoft defaults on your PC, and download the Bing app, you'll get higher priority. According to a FAQ, you'll receive an email once you've cleared the waitlist and are able to access the new chat experience.

The company expects to make access available to millions of people in the coming weeks, as well as a mobile version of the experience. Microsoft says it's "excited to put the new Bing and Edge into the real world to get the critical feedback required to improve our models as we scale" in a blog post about the rollout.

The waitlist page provides some examples of how you can use the tool, such as asking it to create a three-course vegetarian menu for six people with a chocolate dessert or to find an all-wheel drive car that seats six and has a 0-60 time of less than six seconds.

Microsoft is collaborating with OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, to enable Bing's AI-powered features. Microsoft, on the other hand, claims to be using a "next-generation OpenAI large language model" that is "even more powerful than ChatGPT."

Users can enter queries up to 1,000 words long into the new Bing and receive annotated AI-generated answers that appear alongside regular web search results. Microsoft is also introducing a new built-in chatbot on Bing to help users refine their search results.

The announcement came as part of Microsoft's surprise press event on Tuesday, where it also revealed details about an AI-powered "copilot for the web" that will be available in Microsoft Edge. While you're using the browser, the tool can do things like summarize a PDF you're viewing, generate code, and even create a social media post.

Microsoft made the announcement just one day after Google revealed that it is developing a similar AI-powered tool called Bard. The two companies are currently engaged in a heated debate about the future of artificial intelligence, and this is most likely just the beginning.
